antenna positioning on vehicle

Antenna positioning on vehicles is crucial for optimizing signal reception and transmission. Here are the common positions and related considerations:

  Common Antenna Positions

Roof: The antenna is often placed at the rear of the roof. This position provides a relatively clear line of sight, reducing the interference from the vehicle body and surrounding obstacles, thus enhancing the signal reception and transmission efficiency. For example, the shark-fin antenna on many cars is usually installed in this position1.

Windshield: Some antennas are designed as windshield antennas, which are printed on the front, side or rear windshield. For instance, antennas used for AM/FM radios, VICS, FM multiplexing, TV, telephone, and remote control are often installed in this way.

Fender: The whip antenna on the fender is installed on the front or rear fender. It was more commonly used on vehicles exported to North America and is mainly used for AM/FM radios.

Trunk: The GPS antenna can be placed in the trunk4. The spacious and relatively open space in the trunk is conducive to signal reception, and it can also ensure the stability of the signal4.

Bumper: The bumper is also a common installation position for GPS antennas4. Its groove design facilitates installation and can hide the antenna to a certain extent, increasing concealment4.

Inside the Dashboard or Roof: Some composite antennas and plug-in antennas are installed inside the dashboard or on the roof. The former combines multiple antennas into one unit, which is common in Europe and is mostly used for telephone and GPS combinations. The latter has directivity and is used at frequencies above the GHz band.

  Considerations for Antenna Positioning

Signal Reception: The antenna should be placed in an area with good line of sight and few obstructions to ensure maximum signal strength and quality. For example, avoid placing it near large metal objects or in areas blocked by the vehicle body.

Safety: The antenna should not affect the normal driving of the vehicle or the safety of the occupants. It should not block the driver's view or interfere with the deployment of emergency equipment.

Interference: Consider the interference between the antenna and other electronic devices on the vehicle. Keep a certain distance from devices that may cause interference to avoid affecting each other's normal operation.

Maintenance and Accessibility: The antenna should be installed in a position that is convenient for maintenance and inspection. Technicians should be able to access it easily without having to remove other major components.

Aesthetics and Vehicle Design: The antenna position should be coordinated with the overall appearance and design of the vehicle. Try to choose a position that is both beautiful and does not affect the vehicle's styling.

Environmental Factors: Consider the impact of the vehicle's use environment on the antenna. For example, in areas with frequent rain or snow, waterproof and corrosion-resistant measures should be taken; in high-temperature environments, the heat resistance of the antenna should be considered.
