Singapore has a land area of approximately 735.2 square kilometers and a current total population of over 5.918 million. It has a high degree of urbanization and a resident density of 8,155 people per square kilometer, ranking third in the world. This number is still growing. At the same time, public transportation is also under pressure to improve its service level.
Therefore, the implementation of the "Smart Nation 2025" strategy must give priority to the optimization of space. A series of emerging information and communication technologies (ICT) and Internet of Things (IOT) technologies have also emerged. The application of cloud-based data storage solutions has significantly improved the quality of urban traffic in Singapore and has also been recognized by the government.
Singapore officially launches innovative electronic road pricing system
Singapore ERP Electronic Toll Collection
System In 2016, Singapore announced the launch of the DSRC solution (electronic road toll collection system based on satellite communication). Their ERP system is a 5.9GHZ frequency band. It adopts the toll pass system (Toll Pass System) developed by Mitsubishi Industries of Japan. VLG's IOT antenna solution was selected by Mitsubishi in the Singapore DSRC project. We are very happy that Singapore has successfully launched its own ERP system (electronic road toll collection system), and our company is also honored to participate in solving the congestion problem in Singapore.
Now, Singapore's "ERP gates" are all over major highways and trunk roads. The electronic display screens of "ERP gates" set up in different areas and sections will automatically adjust the toll prices in real time according to the congestion levels of different vehicles and different roads at different times. When the speed is fast, it means that the road is unobstructed, and the toll will be less, otherwise the toll will be higher. In short, the Singapore government does not want everyone to drive, so it sets a higher access fee to suppress the crowds of people who drive by themselves, and to warn drivers to avoid peak hours and congested sections, thereby greatly easing traffic pressure.
The full name of Singapore's ERP system is Electronic Road Pricing. If we separate the R and P, they can be coincidentally corresponded to Riding and Parking.
In fact, the ERP system is composed of two subsystems: "Riding" and "Parking". The former is an electronic toll collection system for vehicle driving. It can collect corresponding fees for vehicles passing through specific times and places by using on-board equipment and road toll facilities to reduce vehicle congestion and promote smooth traffic; the latter is an electronic toll collection system for parking lots. It can guide vehicles to park in suitable locations by adjusting parking fees according to the location and demand of the parking lot, so as to reduce parking lot congestion and optimize the use of parking resources. The above two subsystems of ERP work together to provide a comprehensive, intelligent and effective solution for Singapore's traffic management.
What is the DSRC launched in Singapore?
DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications) is a technical standard for vehicle communications that supports short-distance, high-speed data exchange in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). DSRC technology is mainly used in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communications to improve the safety and efficiency of road traffic.
DSRC usually operates in the 5.9 GHz frequency band and provides two-way communication capabilities, allowing vehicles to exchange information in real time, as well as between vehicles and roadside units. This information can include key data such as the vehicle's location, speed, and direction of travel, thereby helping the vehicle predict potential collision risks and take appropriate preventive measures.
The fact that VLG was selected by Mitsubishi in the Singapore DSRC project is inseparable from the many years of experience and team accumulated by VLG in antenna solutions. VLG Antenna Solutions was established in 2005: it is a company integrating R&D, production and sales. The company has more than 350 employees, including more than 100 R&D personnel, 4 doctoral team members and 3 master team members. It has more than 100 utility model and invention patents, as well as excellent equipment support, including 18 microwave darkrooms and supporting test instruments. The main antenna solutions are divided into four categories: 1. Internet of Things antenna solutions 2. Internet of Vehicles antenna solutions 3. Beidou antenna solutions 4. Wiring solutions
VLG has been preparing for DSRC since 2015 and currently has strong and proven combat performance, automotive OEM production, in addition to this advantage, also has the following:
1. Low latency: <10ms,
2. Independent deployment, no reliance on cellular networks for secure applications
3. Stable congestion performance (PRR, latency), fully compatible with next-generation DSRC (802.11bd) by design
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Antennas:
The new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based system will replace the current ERP system, which has been in operation for 25 years (since 1998) and is approaching the end of its operational life. The existing On-Board Unit (IU) will be replaced by the new OnBoard Unit (OBU), which consists of three components, including the processing unit, antenna and touchscreen display. For motorcycles, these three components are integrated into a single OBU. The new OBU will be provided free of charge to all eligible Singapore-registered vehicles during the installation period.
The antenna designed and developed by VLG is used in the vehicle OBU of the new ERP toll collection system.
